The classic twin keelfish was developed in the mid-1970s as a kneeboard by Steve Lis. Pintail surfboards were a favorite of his, but his fins hung over the side and created drag. He decided to split the tail, giving him the width needed to support his fins while still retaining the performance characteristics of a pintail. This fish proved to be a barrel machine, capable of early paddling, taking fairly late drops, staying high and firm in the pocket, and being punchy from the top. It took a long time for him to refine the design to make it suitable for stand-up surfers, and for the fish design to take off.
